Canal-front rentals in Miami are fewer than in the suburbs to the north, because the city's water is Biscayne Bay and the Miami River. They cluster in the Upper East Side, where Morningside, Belle Meade and Shorecrest reach the bay through short canals, and along the river, which winds inland from downtown toward the airport past boatyards and cargo docks. A canal house here can come with a dock, but the route to the bay may pass a fixed bridge, so ask for the clearance and the depth at low tide before you bring a boat. Low-lying canal streets in Shorecrest flood during king tides, so ask where you can park the car when the street is under water in Miami.
