Homebuyer Programs for Law Enforcement in Florida
Programs for the job, and a home chosen with the job in mind
BreakThru Realty helps Florida homebuyers find the homeownership programs worth asking about, understand how each one shapes the home search, connect with participating lenders, and find homes that fit. For law enforcement and corrections, that means Florida Hometown Heroes and a search that accounts for a marked car in the driveway, the privacy of your address and a schedule that rotates.

Who Hometown Heroes Covers in Law Enforcement
Florida Housing’s public safety group covers full-time employees of a Florida-based local, county, state or federal law enforcement department, juvenile detention facility, correctional facility or emergency operations center. That includes sworn officers and deputies, federal agents stationed in Florida, correctional and correctional probation officers, juvenile detention and probation officers, and 911 dispatchers. The employer is what qualifies you, so civilian roles at an eligible agency are worth asking a lender about too.
The Take-Home Car and the Community You Choose
A marked take-home vehicle narrows the list of communities more than most buyers expect. In a homeowners’ association, Florida law says the association documents may not prohibit an owner from parking a work vehicle that is not a commercial motor vehicle in the owner’s driveway, regardless of official insignia. Condominiums are governed by a different chapter of Florida law, so a condo’s own parking rules decide where the car goes, and some limit vehicles by type, size or marking. We read the declaration and the rules before you write an offer.
Keeping Your Address Out of the Public Record
Florida law exempts from public records the home addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth and photographs of active and former sworn law enforcement personnel and of civilian employees of law enforcement agencies, including correctional and correctional probation officers. Property records are public by default, so send the county property appraiser and tax collector a written, notarized request after closing to have your name removed from their public records. The exemption lasts while you live there; when you sell, a written request releases it.
Choosing a Home With Your Work in Mind
Officers often weigh things other buyers do not: whether the home is inside or outside the jurisdiction they patrol, how visible the driveway is from the street, whether the community has controlled access, and how the drive to the district office or courthouse looks at shift change. None of those has a right answer, but each is easier to settle before the search starts than after you have fallen for a house.
If a Line-of-Duty Injury Ends a Career
Florida exempts from property taxes the homestead of a first responder, including a federal, state or local law enforcement officer or a correctional officer, who is totally and permanently disabled from an injury sustained in the line of duty. You apply to the county property appraiser by March 1 with the employer certificate, physician certification and Social Security documentation the law requires, and a surviving spouse may carry the exemption over.
How BreakThru Realty Works With Law Enforcement Buyers
Consult a mortgage lender who participates in Florida Housing’s programs and get pre-approved for Hometown Heroes. Tell us your agency, your post and your rotation, and we plan showings around them, check vehicle and parking rules in every association you consider, and measure the drive at your hours. After closing we remind you to file the address exemption request and the homestead exemption.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Are federal law enforcement officers eligible for Florida Hometown Heroes?
- Florida Housing lists sworn law enforcement officers at the local, state or federal level, employed full time by a Florida-based law enforcement department. A federal agent working full time in Florida falls within that description; the first-time buyer and county income rules apply as well.
- Can I keep my home address out of Florida property records as a police officer?
- Yes. Florida exempts the home addresses of active and former sworn law enforcement personnel, and of civilian law enforcement employees including corrections officers, from public records. Send a written, notarized request to the county property appraiser and tax collector after closing so they remove your name from their public records.
- Can a condo association stop me from parking my patrol car?
- It can set its own rules. Florida’s protection for work vehicles in driveways is in the homeowners’ association statute, and condominiums are governed by a different chapter. Read a condo’s declaration and parking rules before you make an offer, and ask how the association treats marked vehicles.
- Do corrections officers qualify for Hometown Heroes?
- Florida Housing lists correctional officers, correctional probation officers, juvenile detention officers and juvenile probation officers in its public safety group, when employed full time by a Florida-based correctional facility, juvenile detention facility or law enforcement department.
- Should an officer live inside the jurisdiction they patrol?
- That is a personal call and sometimes an agency one. Some officers want to live in the community they serve; others prefer a line between work and home. Check whether your agency sets any residency rule, then weigh the commute, privacy and the vehicle rules of each community.
