How to Buy an Auto Repair, Body or Tire Shop in Florida

An auto shop earns on its technicians' hours and its customers' trust. Before you price one, confirm that its technicians and its customer relationships will stay, that its equipment is owned and serviceable, and that its site is permitted and clean for the work done there.

Registration and Zoning

Florida requires motor vehicle repair shops to register with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the registration is the shop's, so a new owner confirms what must be filed after a change of ownership. Confirm with the city or county that the site's zoning permits the work done there, including paint booths for collision repair, and that the certificate of use is current.

Technicians and Car Count

Ask for the number of technicians, their certifications and tenure, how they are paid, and billed hours per technician. Ask for the car count and average repair order by month from the shop management system. If the owner diagnoses or writes most service, budget for a service writer or a lead technician.

Collision and Insurer Programs

Body shops often depend on direct repair programs with insurers, which can bring steady volume and can be renegotiated or ended after a change of ownership. Ask which programs the shop is in, how much revenue each brings and what their terms say about a sale. Paint and materials costs and cycle times show how well the shop runs.

Tire Shops and Inventory

Tire shops carry inventory and depend on supplier pricing and fleet accounts. Count the inventory at closing, read supplier agreements and fleet contracts, and check the tire disposal records.

Equipment and Environmental Records

List lifts, alignment machines, diagnostic tools, compressors, frame machines and paint booths with age, ownership and service history. Used oil, solvents, batteries and paint waste must be handled under environmental rules; ask for disposal records and any inspection reports. If the real estate is included, order a Phase I environmental site assessment.

Financing and the Offer

Verify sales against bank deposits and sales tax returns; match parts and labor margins with the shop system. SBA 7(a) financing is open only to buyers whose owners are all U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals living in the United States (since March 1, 2026), with an equity injection of at least ten percent of the project cost; other buyers use cash, seller financing or a conventional loan. Consult a lender about your eligibility. Include a transition period for introductions to fleet accounts and insurer program contacts.

Questions Buyers Ask

Does an auto repair shop need a licence in Florida?
Motor vehicle repair shops register with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, with some exemptions. Confirm what a new owner must file, and that the site's zoning and certificate of use permit the work.
What environmental issues come with buying an auto shop?
Used oil, solvents, paint waste and any underground tanks. Ask for disposal records and inspections, and order a Phase I environmental site assessment if the real estate is part of the sale.
Do insurer repair programs transfer to a new owner?
Not automatically. Each insurer decides; ask how each program treats a change of ownership before you rely on its revenue.
